In a time of breakneck speed, systemic turbulence, mounting consumer expectations and exponential technological reinvention, a global organization felt the need to pin the ongoing transformation journey down to a much deeper evolution of its human dynamics, in order to achieve more sustainable, diffused and long-term business benefits.

Organization and leadership

As a pioneer in its market, this energy leader had been already experimenting with a significant transformation in how it brought data to the core of its decision-making processes and with an agile re-organization of its roles and responsibilities.
In the second half of 2019, we were invited to support them by exploring the concrete impact such initiatives had, both on the leadership model of the entire organization and the individual style each manager adopted with their team.

Experimenting evolution

We agreed to address our client’s request by engaging a selected group of middle managers through a dedicated edition of the Emergent Leadership Unleashed x-course, a two-day experiential journey to explore and co-learn how to manage in adaptiveness and for agility, how to let the full potential of individuals emerge in organizations, and how to create and protect a safe space in which energy can freely flow towards value generation.

Leadership goes emergent

In a deeply energizing, dynamic and emotional experience, this first team was introduced to the trends and forces fueling the rise of adaptive organizations, the need and characteristics of emergent leadership models, the often unfamiliar approaches and tools demanded from managers to coordinate work, and the necessity of re-evaluating employee motivation and re-thinking feedback in such scenarios.

Onboarding the top

An experience within the experience has been imagined and delivered, by getting the top management team of this energy leader to meet one of our best partner professionals, in a free, vibrant and interactive conversation regarding how to acknowledge and overcome inertia when helping a large, complex, human system to evolve.
Through first-hand stories with multinational organizations across sectors and geographies, he helped the senior leaders better appreciate the challenge they are facing, while also introducing the principles and lessons learned from decades of real time strategy, action learning and whole-scale change interventions.

The whole system

The feedback received from the initial group of pioneers paved the way for extending the opportunity to reinvent leadership within the data-driven agile transformation to all of its middle management, through a large group intervention workshop that involved nearly 100 participants.
Tens of kilograms of LEGO bricks, huge amounts of spaghetti pasta and marshmallows, bags of story-cubes and colourful post-its inundated a room where 7 facilitators engaged the group through four learning cycles in which hands-on experience, authentic team interaction and profound sense-making prevailed over slides, in order to empower participants to feel, rather than hear, about alternative perspectives and directions.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Up to par with the most innovative companies in the market, our energy client had already commenced a digital, data-driven, agile transformation. Leveraging on decades of studies in the fields of cognitive sciences, neurobiology, management, strategy and motivation theory, we helped them go deeper and dive into the whys and the hows of managing work and leading people in today’s cutting-edge organizations.
Through the project, participants have learned how a non-positional, networked and emergent take to leadership can foster the passion, trust, responsibility, transparency and autonomy their human system requires to thrive and grow.
